Mr. Dickinson was born in Atlanta, Georgia and lived in Illinois for two years while his father served in the U.S. Navy. He grew up in Rome, Georgia where he lived from the second grade on. Mr. Dickinson attended the Darlington School for two years before transferring to Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass. from where he graduated in 1974. He attended Sewanee, a small liberal arts Episcopal university in Tennessee and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Economics in 1978.

Mr. Dickinson has two brothers, two sisters, and two stepbrothers, and is married to his wife Ann, a Pelham Elementary Kindergarten teacher.  Mr. Dickinson has two children. John, 14, is a 9th-grader at Thomas County Central High School, and Sara, 8, is in the third grade at Jerger Elementary. Mr. Dickinson has coached football, baseball, girls softball, boys and girls soccer, and swimming at CHS.
